(28 September 2011)
John Asley was born in Liverpool in 1938 and enjoyed a happy childhood with his brothers and sister. He was employed by the Merseyside Fire Service for over 25 years and his good friend Matty spoke at his funeral about some of the hilarious times they had together. John had been an active sportsman playing football, cricket and table-tennis in the local leagues and was a passionate supporter of Liverpool FC. When he retired he spent time touring USA and parts of Europe with his family.
He joined the umpiring ranks with MCUA and enjoyed his time on the panel and became a respected umpire on Merseyside. John became ill during the 2011 season and died from pneumonia.

(Tuesday 23 February) Tony Mulligan, a former member of MCUA, died last weekend after suffering a debilitating illness for a number of years. He was a player with Old Xaverians CC,Prescot CC (prior to the merger with Odyssey CC) and Birkenhead Park CC before he took up the white coat. When his illness forced him to retire, he was often seen at Sefton Cricket Club casting his eye over our performances and always available for a chat at the tea interval. (DJ)
(Thursday 10 December) Mike Leddy reports that former member of MCUA, Dave Hodgson died a few days ago. He was 63 years old and had been ill for several months. His funeral was held on Tuesday and I was able to attend.
Dave, who previously played for St Marys College Old Boys, became 2nd XI umpire for Formby CC in 1994 and stood for 5 or 6 seasons. As far as I recall, he umpired the occasional Lever Cup or Kaufman game for MCUA.
(Friday 14 August) ROBBIE ROBINS
Robbie Robins died recently as most you know and your committee thought long and hard about an obituary for him. Instead of the normal tributes we decided to show you a document we started to prepare some time ago. It was part of a submission to the Cabinet Office when we tried to gain a formal honour for Robbie for all his efforts for over 50 years in cricket.
The first application was made in the days when Lol O'Connor was Chairman of the Merseyside Branch and was continued by myself, Jim Bowe, John Steel and Mike Dixon who actually spoke to the girl who operated the Honours computer.
All to no avail, Robbie never got his gong, perhaps it would have been easier if he had been a lollipop man!!! (DJ)
(Thursday 30 July) Following a long illness, Tony Tottey died peacefully on Monday 27th July.
He made a huge contribution to Caldy Cricket Club and he will be sadly missed.
Tony joined what was then known as West Wirral Cricket Club as a youngster in 1950, West Wirral CC is now called Caldy CC. He was a valuable member and a prime mover who continued to support his club until his illness prevented him appearing at Paton Field. A past Captain, he was an accurate spin bowler with whom nobody was able to take liberties and who scored valuable runs in the tail. After he retired from active participation in the game he loved he helped with ground preparation and became the most successful 1st XI team manager in the club’s history and was a great help to whoever was Captain at the time. He was an integral part of the teams that won the Village Cup in 1996 and 1997.
The funeral is on Wednesday, 5th August at 11a.m. at Landican Crematorium, Arrowe Park, Wirral.
Club or Everton ties to be worn where possible. (DJ)

(Thursday 12 March)
A middle order right-handed batsman, Ken Snellgrove was a dedicated professional who made his debut for Lancashire in 1965 and scored 3,906 runs in 105 first-class matches for the county.
He was also an important member of the Old Trafford squad which, under Jack Bond's captaincy, dominated one-day cricket from 1969 to 1972. Ken played eight games for the Lancashire side which won the John Player League in 1970 and he was capped by the county in 1971.
Although he was born in Shepton Mallet and also represented both Ormskirk, where he won the League title in 1980, and Leyland with distinction, he will always be most closely associated with Bootle Cricket Club.
"Ken was one of the shining lights of the Liverpool Competition," said the former Bootle captain Ian Cockbain. "He was from Bootle, played for Bootle and then played for Lancashire. He was the type of cricketer I was striving to become. When I broke into the Lancashire side most of the team had played alongside him and they all spoke warmly of him."
In recent years, Ken could invariably be found at Wadham Road or wherever Bootle were in action. He watched the cricket closely and took particular pleasure in the achievements of his son David, whose first season as Bootle skipper begins in a few weeks' time.
When persuaded to comment on games, he would express his deeply perceptive views quietly. He wore the knowledge of the old pro lightly but his analyses of matches were shrewd indeed. Ken Snellgrove was a cricket man.
Our thoughts are with Ken's wife Pamela and their children David and Karen.(Paul Edwards)
His funeral is to be held at Christ Church, Aughton (Jnctn of A59 & Long Lane) on Monday, 16th March at 11.45a.m. A private cremation will follow.

(Thursday 5 February)
It is with great sadness that St Helens Recs CC announces the death on Friday 30th January after a long illness of Tony Riley, aged 70 years.
Born Michael Anthony Riley, his career at Recs started when he left school and for more than fifty years he could be regularly seen on the cricket field and in the social club. He was 3rd XI captain through three decades and occasional 2nd XI captain.
After retirement, he umpired the 2nd XI for many years and when required stood in as 1st XI scorer. Whilst captain and subsequently, he served on the Committee culminating in him becoming Chairman from 1997 to 2002 and President from 2004.
Such a rounded personality and character will be hugely missed and our thoughts are with Joan, his wife, Jason and Greg, his sons and all his family.
Tony's funeral will be held on Monday 9th February at Christ Church, Eccleston, St Helens at 1:45pm and St Helens Crematorium at 2:30pm. (Peter Whitfield)

(Sunday 23 November)
Brian Armstrong's funeral was held at Southport Crematorium on Monday 17 November when hundreds of his relatives and friends were present to say farewell to an extremely popular man. It was a Humanist Service and Geoff Tittershill came from his home in Spain to deliver a very enlightening eulogy. There is no doubt that Brian's passing will leave an enormous void at Ormskirk Cricket Club.(DJ)
